Bangladesh and China on Tuesday, signed a Memorandum of Understanding in Dhaka for setting up a 1320 MW coal-based power plant at Moheshkhali in southeastern part of Bangladesh, as part of government's comprehensive plan to meet the growing demand of electricity.
The deal was signed by Bangladesh Power Development Board and China's state owned firm on joint venture basis with Bangladesh holding 49% equity. Under the deal, Bangladesh will mobilize 30 per cent funds through equity with the remaining 70 per cent coming as soft loan from China.
Last month, the two countries signed an MoU for setting up a coal-based power plant in Pataukhali in southern Bangladesh. Bangladesh had earlier signed a deal with India's NTPC to install a 1320 MW coal-fired power plant at Ramphal, the first unit of which is expected to operationalize by December, 2018.
